Rule #1: Be organized. Think about your content and make sure that it has a natural rhythm.Rule #2: Minimize clicking. The more you make visitors click, the quicker they will leave. Just keep in mind the times you’ve gotten annoyed because you couldn’t find the info you were looking for quickly.
Rule #3: Avoid splash pages. If someone visits your site, they are there for a reason; they don’t need a special invitation to enter your site.
Rule #4: Keep your page lengths at a minimum. Again, remember how annoying endless scrolling is? If you have that much to say, divide your content into separate pages. Again, Rule #1…organize your content.
Rule #5: Always include menus on each page. Menus (or navigation bars) should be either on the top or on the left hand side of your page. If you place the menu on the bottom, chances are that visitors will leave before scrolling all the way down.
Designing a website that is both esthetically pleasing as it is easy to use shouldn’t be that hard to do. Just keep in mind what you like and don’t like (as the end-user) and you will be well on your way to designing a great site!!
